There are 2 different types of people in a ladder: the Ladder Administrator, and the Ladder Competitors. There is only one Ladder Administrator but multiple Ladder Competitors.
The Ladder Administrator creates the ladder and sets the various options (ladder name, group password, personalized color scheme, option package, ladder ranking algorithm).
The Ladder Competitors are the users who compete in the ladder. The following diagram provides an overview in the lifecycle of a ladder.
